There was a slight increase in the positivity of SARS-CoV2, during the week of May 1-7, according to the epidemiological report of EODY on viral infections of the respiratory system (SARS-CoV-2, influenza viruses and respiratory syncytial virus – RSV).

SARS-CoV2 virus – COVID-19 infection: THE positivity in all the tested samples it showed a small increase compared to the previous week. The number of admissions for COVID-19 showed a decrease compared to the previous week and a 13% decrease compared to the average weekly number of new admissions over the previous 4 weeks.

The number of young people tubing present increase over the previous week and an 11% increase over the average weekly number of new intubations over the previous 4 weeks.

The number of intubated patients with COVID-19 infection is 61. They were recorded 52 deaths with a median age of 86 years (range 68-99 years).

During the last weeks all the strains sequenced belonged to the sub-variants Omicron’s BA.2 and BA.5, with BA.2 being superior. The most frequent sub-variant of BA.2 is XBB.1.5 (79%), followed by the BA.2.75 sub-variant (12%). A total of 14 samples have been detected positive for the new variant under surveillance, XBB.1.16. Viral load surveillance in municipal wastewater showed an increase in SARSCoV-2 virus circulation in 4 out of 10 areas tested.

Influenza virus: THE positivity for influenza in the community presented reduction in the samples from PHY (sentinel). There was no new severe case of laboratory-confirmed influenza with ICU hospitalization, nor a new death from laboratory-confirmed influenza.

In total, since the beginning of influenza surveillance, 68 people with influenza have been hospitalized in the ICU and 26 deaths have been recorded. During the same period, 364 samples positive for influenza viruses (sentinel samples and hospital samples) were registered in the two influenza reference centers, of which 287 (79%) were type A strains and 77 (21%) were type B strains.

Influenza episodes (regardless of pathogen): A decrease compared to the previous week was recorded in the community.

Respiratory syncytial virus-RSV: Positivity remained low.
