The appeal made at the beginning of January 4 for a bone marrow donation in order to save George Popov, a 3.5-year-old boy who is currently being treated at the Pediatric Clinic of Ippokratio with a serious genetic disease, had a pleasant outcome.
“Last night we were informed that the man who will give life to George was found. We do not know details, we do not know who he is, nor where he is from, but we thank him very much, as we thank all the people who responded to our appeal and went to give a sample “said the mother of the little boy, Eleni Efthymiadou to APE-MPE.
The little boy, who until last December had no known problems, shortly before Christmas developed lumps in his throat and developed a fever. After continuous hematological examinations and as his health condition was deteriorating, he was admitted to the Pediatric Clinic of Ippokratio where he was diagnosed with infectious mononucleosis. However, the tests that followed showed that he had hemophagocytic syndrome, which is a serious genetic disease from which George’s brother, Michalis, died at the age of 25 months in August 2017. Little George’s condition worsened and even remained intubated for one week.
We thank the donor, the doctors of Ippokratio, Mr. Antahopoulos, Mrs. Farmaki and all their collaborators, as well as we thank “Lampsi” and all those who hurried to give a sample. I ask those who made an appointment to give a sample, to go, because with the marrow they will give, another child or another person can be saved “, added Mrs. Efthymiadou.
