Mr. Sidiropoulos is engaged in wood carving and wood constructions as a hobby
If someone crosses the bike path of Igoumenitsa, their eyes will not only stop at the sea that is next to it or the green nature that surrounds it, but they will also admire wood-carved creations, which make up a special visual environment. Works sculpted on trunks of dead plane trees, whose roots are still in the ground and “tell stories”, from mythology and life in nature.
We met their creator, Mr. Tasos Sidiropoulos next to his works, cleaning the surrounding area from the grass. Although he is from Kastoria, he shows a special interest in Igoumenitsa, the city where for the last 9 years, he has been working as an executive of a large Greek Insurance Company. He seems to enjoy them and with particular satisfaction he describes to us how he gave “life” to the dead plane trees on the bike path.
Mr. Sidiropoulos, as he reports in APE-MBE, is engaged in wood carving and wood constructions as a hobby. We asked him, what gave birth to the idea to create what was left of the plane trees destroyed by the disease metachromatic ulcer.
“On a walk along the cycle path, I first saw a log, noticed it and thought it was a seat. Then the associations began. I immediately thought of the legends in the area. They say that the cave located above the city, in the pine forest, was the Homeric cave of the cyclops and that the islet of Prasoudi, just before the entrance to the port, is the large stone that was thrown into the sea. Ithaca is not particularly far away. Thus, this story gave birth to the idea to carve the throne of Odysseus on the remains of the plane tree and I did it”, says Mr. Sidiropoulos.
As in his free hours, he created art on the bike path, the locals who took their walk there, were excited. Even more, with the result. Some pointed out to him, as he points out, that hidden in cotton wool, there is still a trunk of a dead plane tree.
“I immediately cleaned the spot and found the remains of the plane tree. I saw that the wood was not very fragile. I could move on. They were two trunks joined together. As I looked at them I said: a bushy-tailed squirrel. The next day I started the project”
The creations of Mr. Sidiropoulos are admired not only by locals, but also by tourists. They stand, wonder and take pictures. They are two important works of art, which were created with great love by the artist, for no profit. Without any fee. His ambition is to “open” the road, for an artistic route on the bike path of Igoumenitsa.
“We could, with the support of society, awaken other artists, photographers, painters and sculptors, so that a wonderful artistic path emerges”, points out Tasos Sidiropoulos
As he reveals to us, he still has two creations from tree trunks washed up by the sea. It is a crocodile and a dolphin 4.5 and 4.20 meters long respectively, which in consultation with the municipality are expected to be placed in parts of the city.
