Resolution of support and solidarity towards him mayor of Heimarra Fred Beleriswho has been detained by the Albanian authorities since May 12, was adopted today by the city council of Athens, following a proposal by the mayor of Athens, Costas Bakoyannis.

The municipal council in its resolution regarding the arrest of the newly elected mayor, Fredi Beleris, and the vice-president of the Union of Chimarriots, Pantelis Kokavesis, points out – among other things, the immediate need to release the two distinguished members of the Greek minority, stressing that “the national Greek minority it is entitled to enjoy its freedom, with respect for its particularities, historical identity and traditions”.

Also, it is stated that “the neighboring country is called upon to harmonize with European data, providing conditions of safety and protection of private and community property and with respect for self-governing institutions and human life. It must immediately release the two men, following the rules of international law.”

Present at the municipal council meeting were the son of the mayor of Heimarra, Petros Beleris, his brother Leonardos, as well as the president of Heimarriots of Athens, Thodoris Goumas.

It is noted that the resolution was accepted by a majority. The factions of SYRIZA and KKE voted against, while the faction of Pavlos Geroulanos “Athens is You” voted in favor.

The mayor of Athens, Costas Bakoyiannis, in his intervention emphasized: “Let’s agree that we can put aside our ideological and political differences and come out a little from our doctrines, when two people, indeed fellow self-administered people, are at this moment talking in prison . And it is our duty, not only national, but also moral, to support them by all means.”
