A family friend told MailOnline: ‘I spoke to his dad and he said Scott had been electrocuted.
He added: “His sister flew there last night to be with the rest of the family. Scott was a great guy and very popular.
“He lived in Greece with his family and spoke Greek. He liked it there, but now they come and go. They visit there cottage and stay here now.’
Sendon died at the scene despite the efforts of his girlfriend and emergency services to save him.
Brazilian Wander Machado told Rodiaki: “I swam to get him out. But as soon as I reached the board, I saw his body bent and face down on the board. His face had turned purple.
“I immediately realized that every second was critical and began to pull him to shore.”
It was understood that other tourists had urged the man to get out of the water when he got into difficulty.
According to reports, his girlfriend and other beachgoers started calling for help after he was struck by lightning.
He was then pulled from the water by those on the beach and was “still alive”, according to witnesses.
But he died after the arrival of an ambulance and doctors and was later taken to the Archangelos Health Center.
Mr Machado added: “I was worried the same would happen to me as it was still raining, but I didn’t stop.
“The paramedics arrived a short time later and did all the resuscitation procedures to keep him alive. Unfortunately, I found out a little later that he didn’t make it.’
The Central Port Authority of Rhodes has launched an investigation, according to Rodiaki.
An FCDO spokesman said: “We are supporting the family of a British man who died in Rhodes and are in contact with the local authorities.”
