Details are coming to light about one 29 years oldwho after the killing of a 50-year-old man in Ghazi, last September, hid for months in a monastery in Porto Rafti.

According to ERT, the perpetrator told the monks that he wants to enter the Monastery to get off drugs.

“He was supposed to have come for spiritual benefit to the monastery (…) I had asked him if he was thinking of becoming a monk, he answered me no, I’m not for a monk but he always tells me never say never” stated one of the monks.

How the police caught him

For eight months, the police had lost track of him but were tracking his family.

Thus, when on Tuesday (30/5) the 29-year-old left the monastery and met his father and sister in a cafe in Porto Rafti, the police arrested him.

According to police sources, the perpetrator’s presence at the monastery coincides with the victim’s beating to death.

The 29-year-old had gotten into a fight inside a club in Gazi with a 50-year-old man, whom he viciously hit on the head as he left the shop. The victim succumbed to his injuries at the Gennimatas hospital.

According to the 29-year-old: “He started swearing at me for no reason. He tried to push me away. He hit me first. I punched him and he fell down. Then I left.”

The 29-year-old left the monastery yesterday (30/5) and went to Porto Rafti to a cafe to see two of his relatives. The police intervened and handcuffed him.

The forensic examination showed that the 29-year-old victim had head injuries, with the police estimating that the 29-year-old had an iron fist.

“He was a good man”

The monk who has lived for 33 years in the Lavreotiki monastery where the perpetrator hid explains that after the arrest the 29-year-old’s father went there to collect his son’s things.

“He left because he was kidnapped, he was helping in the monastery, he was a good man, he offered help to the monastery” says the monk.
