Tons of rubble from the sewer network construction project are being deposited in the Vakalopoulo area – Intervention of the Region of Attica – Residents announce mobilizations – What the mayor of Pallini responds to
Her intervention of the Attica Region caused by the complaints of the residents of Pallini about the uncontrolled depositing of rubble in the Vakalopoulo area, at the foot of Penteli. The rubble, as established by the autopsy of the competent service of the Region, comes from the excavation for the construction of a sewage network in Pallini. According to residents’ complaints at skai.gr that have also been done to the competent services, tons of rubble have been deposited in this particular spot, where there are trees and low vegetation, instead of transporting them kilometers away, it destroys a free space and creates an unbearable, perhaps even dangerous, situation.
The complaints speak of an environmental crime that is being committed with the tolerance of the municipality of Pallini and has been going on for months. The deposition of the thousands of tons of rubble is done as part of an agreement between the municipality and the contractor who has undertaken the excavations for the sewer network. According to the decision 349/2022 of the Financial Committee of the municipality of Pallini, the municipality accepted the contractor’s donation related to the cleaning and sanitation of the soil and shaping of the building blocks in the Vakalopoulos area, as well as the common areas intended for the future construction of sports facilities. With the contract in question, the municipal authority simultaneously grants the company the right to fill up the common areas to a height of 0.80 centimeters, on the grounds of the creation of a future sports facility. According to the complaints, the benefit to the contractor of not having to remove the thousands of tons of rubble in designated areas is huge.
Much more, the region of Attica, in its letter to the municipality of Pallini, calls for the immediate removal of the tons of rubble that have been deposited right next to the stream, pointing out that in the event of heavy rainfall, these will be swept into the stream with the risk of causing floods .
The community council of Pallini has already complained to the municipality, but as reported no answers have been given. In fact, the unanswered questions about environmental crime preoccupied the Community Council of Pallini in a special meeting, which unanimously decided to request information from every competent department of the Municipality, the Region, the Forest Service, the Archaeological Service, EYDAP on whether the project in question – donation was made in accordance with urban planning and environmental provisions, as well as to contact the Environmental Prosecutor in order to thoroughly check every aspect of the case and to investigate any violations of the legislation.
The residents of the area are in an uproar and are preparing protest mobilizations demanding both the protection of the natural environment and their properties.
The skai.gr addressed to the mayor of Pallini Mr. Athanasios Zoutsos taking notice of the complaints. Mr. Zoutsos spoke of a distortion of reality which aims to misinform the citizens now that we are approaching the municipal elections and argued that the redevelopment that has begun in the area is being done following a unanimous decision by the municipal council and the financial committee of the municipality of Pallini .
“Everything that is done in the area is done after a unanimous decision of the municipal council and the financial committee of the municipality of Pallini, it is done in accordance with the city plan, that is, it is not done outside the plan or in a forest area. It is also done in full implementation of the prescribed heights from the city plan.
It takes place on plots of land within the city plan, one of which is large for use by sports facilities and there we intend to build our sports centers, and next to it, which has some smaller blocks of land that are communal areas, we will create squares and playgrounds”.
As for the rubble which, according to the residents, in some cases reaches several meters in height, the mayor Pallinis points out that the rubble has been placed there following a decision of the municipal council because the ground is sloping.
“In order to play a pitch, you won’t play it downhill with a 20/ incline, because then you will be climbing and not pitching. So, as foreseen by the plan, we said that it should be formed at the predicted altitude defined by the city plan. They had to be embanked and shaped to the final elevation where the plan provides. Lies have short legs and soon the truth appears” ends up .
