For the last day of her life Georginatestified at her trial Roulas Pispirigouthe director of the Pediatric Cardiology Department of the Onassio Cardiac Surgery Center, Dr. Ioannis Papagiannis.

The man who had installed a special device to monitor the heart function of the unfortunate girl, in his testimony before the Joint Jury, contributed important data from the day of death and gave his own picture as captured by the electronic messages of the device.

“There is no possibility by which we can attribute Georgina’s death to her heart,” emphasized in his testimony the Dr. Papagiannis.

The witness spoke clearly about the events on the day of the toddler’s death, January 29, 2022, emphasizing the following:

“Twenty minutes before his death the child had a normal cardiac rhythm: On the last day of Georgina’s life we have important data. I received a call from the mother during the standoff and she asked me to see a recording she had sent me. I went into the system and saw that at 2:00 in the afternoon there was a normal heart rate. That is, 20 minutes before the event the child had a normal rhythm. At the child’s resuscitation around 3:30pm I was again sent a recording showing that the machine was acting as a pacemaker because the pulse had dropped below 60. It had not recorded any dangerous arrhythmia that would cause it to act as a defibrillator. When the heart stopped working I was sent a cardiogram which showed that the machine was still working but the heart was not responding…”.

Narrating what preceded this episode, about a year earlier, during which little Georgina had suffered a miscarriage while being treated at the Karamandane hospital in Patras and was therefore transferred to the Onassios ICU for further monitoring, Dr. Ioannis Papagiannis asserted: ” Georgina was in the ICU for a month and was monitored by a monitor, she had never experienced any arrhythmias. He had no pathological bradycardia or other arrhythmias. We also performed other tests to reveal any other latent disorders that are not seen on the simple cardiogram. And that was ruled out. We did an ultrasound check, everything was normal, except for mild disorders that were due to the hypoxemia the child had gone through,” Mr. Papagiannis said in his testimony, talking about the girl’s state of health.

Despite the defense’s stated position, the witness maintained that there was no indication of a heart problem, strongly underlining “I don’t believe Georgina died of her heart”, while he explained the way and the methodology followed to rule out a heart problem, emphasizing that “little Jortina before the incident was a lively child.”

The poem between its president was also particularly interesting Mixed Jury Court and the witness, with the central object of examination being the case of ketamine administration.

Chairman: Is it possible that there was a genetic arrhythmogenic disease and it was not detectable? 5,000 genes were tested and this one was negative, nothing was found.

Witness: There is a minimum percentage. Even 1 in 100 of the rare cases would register in defibrillator operation.

Chairman: What kind of drug is ketamine?

Witness: It is a sedative drug, we administer it when we have to do some painful act, we use it for example in catheterization of the heart.

Chairman: Is ketamine used in resuscitation?

Witness: It is unlikely, when the patient is in remission, to dose him with ketamine.

Chairman: When we have a child who is sleeping and has a seizure, as in this case the defendant mentioned about Georgina, will it be preceded by restlessness, difficult breathing? The mother’s description is that the child stood up, shook its arms and legs. Is this consistent with suspension?

Witness: I would not have expected such an event to end up like this, it is not explained by an underlying arrhythmogenic problem.

Prosecutor: What justification do you give? How does a strong heart stop working?

Witness: We are not given any clear cause for the heart.

Prosecutor: You saw the child between the two interruptions. Do you find any similarities between these two breaks?

Witness: Obviously I can’t say for sure, because I wasn’t in front of the events. But in both cases there was no arrhythmia.
