The course of the bad weather in detail
Flooding occurred in Thessaloniki, Lesvos, Halkidiki, Kastoria, with a number of municipalities in Western Macedonia submitting a request to declare a state of emergency. Mainly in eastern and western Thessaloniki, the streets turned into rivers. The stream of Xiropotamos overflowed from the large volume of water.
Serious problems were also caused in Halkidiki with roads turning into rivers in Nikiti and Paralia Dionysos, while a driver recorded the shocking moment when rushing water entered the car while it was in motion.
The streets have literally turned into rivers
Serious problems in Thermi – Damage to crops as well
Serious problems were caused in areas of the municipality of Thermi by the heavy rainfall that broke out in the early morning. The largest of these are located in Vasilika, Souroti, Thermi and especially in the area of the extension and the Dam.
Specifically, in the area of the Dam, the problem was created by the huge volume of water, which exceeded the level of the overflow and overflowed, sweeping away the Palaimahon bridge and two other bridges in the area of the refreshment station. The area was cordoned off until the water level receded.
In Vasilika, the problems were caused by the overflow of the stream, resulting in damage to houses, roads in the settlement, greenhouses and crops. The damage in Souroti was of a smaller scale. The Civil Protection of Thermi municipality had to intervene in two cases in the area of Kardia and Scholario to remove dangerous trees.
Teams of the municipality led by the Mayor Theodoros Papadopoulos and the vice-mayors of Civil Protection Konstantinos Kougioumtzidis, Technical Services Spyros Gandas and Inspection Vassilis Moustakas, were from the first moment at the points where the most serious problems were presented and proceeded with interventions in order to limit the damages from the rushing waters in houses and crops, while roads and crossings deemed dangerous were blocked. For this purpose, three JCB type machines, a loader as well as private machines were mobilized, while in some cases the assistance of the Fire Service was needed, which proceeded to pump out water.
In fact, the vice-mayors Mr. Kouyoumtzidis and Mr. Gandas helped free a driver, whose car was immobilized by the rushing waters on an Irish crossing in the Fragma area, on the road that connects Thermi with Triadi, and they towed the car.
“Within a few hours, large amounts of water fell, causing damage, mainly in the area of Vasiliki and the Dam. From the first moment, we are at all the points where problems occurred to deal with them, but also to block dangerous crossings, so that no citizen is in danger”, said the mayor of Thermi, thanking the municipality’s employees, volunteers and private individuals who helped .
They remove the mud with shovels and brooms
Residents are trying to save their properties in any way they can in order to remove the water and mud caused by the overflow of the stream in Xiropotamos. Also, bulldozers are trying to clear the roads.
In Evosmos, due to the heavy rainfall, it flooded, stopping the traffic of vehicles on the Evosmos ring road.
