World Refugee Day is celebrated every year on June 20.
“We honor the strength, courage and perseverance of millions of our fellow citizens who have been forced to leave their homeland in search of safety,” the Greek International Organization for Migration said in a statement.
All over the world, communities, agencies, collectives and people of all ages are taking big and small steps in solidarity with refugees.
“In Athens, on the occasion of this year’s World Refugee Day, we join our voices and our forces in two events-meetings where we will all create, discuss, learn, look for solutions and proposals, play, photograph, sing , sending a strong message of solidarity and harmonious coexistence.

June 20, Kypseli Municipal Market, 19:00 – 23:00
19:00 Screenings of short films by and about refugees.
20:00 “Through the eyes of the protagonists”, a discussion about photographic creation and the refugee issue, with a parallel screening of photographic material. Coordinated by Thanasis Stavrakis, chief photographer of the Associated Press, Greece, Cyprus, Albania & North Macedonia.
21:00 Music and dance from Africa by the groups MANDELA GALS and GUMBOOT TRIO of the Vana Ba Afrika community. Polyphonic song by GRUPI POLIFONIK VLLAZERIMI of the Federation of Albanian Associations of Greece. Siamand Soufizadeh on vocals and guitar. The music program is coordinated by the Greek Immigrant Forum.
At the same time, there will be workshops for children and a photography exhibition entitled “Capturing the Light”, while the participating organizations will inform the public about their actions.
The Food Truck of Giorgos Glinos will also make a stop at Kypseli Municipal Market, which will welcome Barshank Haj Younes from Syria and will serve Greek-Syrian Street Food options, as part of the Cooking #WithRefugees festival.

June 22, Serafion of the Municipality of Athens, 18:00 – 22:00
18:00 Greetings – Start of events.
18:30 Open discussion – Start of parallel workshops on: a) homelessness, b) access to the labor market/entrepreneurship and c) inclusion.
20:00 Fashion show from refugee & immigrant communities.
21:00 Theater performance by a group of volunteers/students from Ireland (SCI Hellas).
In the area there will be a buffet with food from refugee & immigrant communities, while at the same time there will be various activities for children.
In addition, visual informational material will be shown with content concerning the operation of humanitarian organizations, self-governing bodies and refugee & immigrant communities.
The organization and coordination of the events in Serafio will be done by the refugee & immigrant communities, in collaboration with the Hellenic Refugee Forum.
On Sunday, June 23, at 6:00 p.m., a friendly football game will be held at Roof’s stadium between the Hellenic Refugee Forum and HOPE Refugees from the GI Organization.
