Nikos Tzanakis, professor of Pulmonology at the University of Crete, described the number of cases recorded in recent days as fictitious, speaking to SKAI and the show “Simera”.
As he said “the quality and quantity of diagnostics during the holiday week was close to reality, while now we have a reality that says we do not detect at least half or in any case a large number of infected people. This is because if Omicron sticks to people who have been vaccinated because they have very mild or no symptoms at all, they do not get tested.
He added that despite the reduction recorded in cases, the pressure on the NSS does not fall, but on the contrary rises. “Imports have been consolidated over 550 and these are not done without cases in the community,” he said.
Mr. Tzanakis pointed out that the drop in cases from the holiday week to 50,000 cases was the week that reflected reality. “Our estimate is that there are currently around 40,000-45,000 cases recorded, while last week it was at 22,800. “I estimate that around 50% -60% of the cases we find with the controls”, he stressed. Especially for today, he predicted that the cases will range between 28,000-35,000.
He even suggested that self-tests be made available to the entire population, in order to detect citizens who have been infected with the virus. “We do not enter the process of testing. “During the week of the holidays, when free self-tests were given, 80% did it and that is why we detected so many cases and cut the congestion with a knife”.
However, the professor appeared optimistic that around January 20, the “flattening” of the pandemic will come and at the end of the month, the decline of hard indicators, intubation and deaths will begin.
However, he stressed that Omicron is not a simple flu, as in the university clinic of Crete, in 65 hospitalizations in single beds, 78% concerns the Omicron mutation, as well as 95% of pediatric admissions.
