A bear that had … stolen chicken coops and also a dovecote in Variko Florinas they managed to “fight” scientists and reintegrate her in a forest area, far from the settlement. In order to be able to follow its tracks in case it approaches livestock farms again, the bear was radio-tagged and its movements will be monitored daily by the Florina Forestry Directorate and the KALLISTO Environmental Organization. If the animal approaches a settlement in the future, the data from the radio collar will make its location known, facilitating its repulsion.

The female bear, aged about 8 years and weighing 130 kg it was regular … a visitor to chicken coops and a pigeon loft for a month until, after a week of efforts, scientists managed to trap her. According to a related announcement, the process of trapping, drugging, transporting and reviving the animal in a new area is a practice that is applied internationally and in the majority of cases is effective, as it causes the animal the necessary shock to avoid to approach residential areas.

For trapping, a transportable special bear-cage trap was first installed, which could be easily transported in case the bear was doing damage near another settlement. In the first phase of the operation, officials from the Forestry Directorate of Florina, KOMATH, the Police Department of Amyntaio and the Environmental Organizations ARKTOUROS and KALLISTO participated. After a few days with no results in terms of trapping and with the bear not seeming to have moved away from Variko, some traps were set with a special wire rope. Finally, the animal was caught in the early hours of June 27 and was radio-tagged by collaborators of the KALLISTO Environmental Organization and the Laboratory of Microbiology and Parasitology of the Department of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Thessaly, in the presence of officers from the Forestry Directorate of Florina.

Both the University of Thessaly, as well as KALLISTO and ARKTOUROS are partners in the European project “LIFE Bear-Smart Corridors” which aims to ensure the functionality of important bear movement corridors, the so-called “smart coexistence corridors”.

The “LIFE Bear-Smart Corridors” project is an international collaboration between agencies from Greece, Italy and the Netherlands and is implemented in the Municipality of Amyntaio and the Municipalities of Trikkaia and Meteora. On the Greek side, the Environmental Organizations “KALLISTO” and “ARKTOUROS”, the Development Company of Trikala KENAKAP SA, the Municipality of Amyntaio and the Laboratory of Microbiology and Parasitology of the Department of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Thessaly participate in the project.
