Memories are expected to be awakened today, Friday, June 30, from the case of the death of little Melina Paraskaki, who died in December 2015 after a routine operation for “meatballs”.

After the appeal by the Supreme Court of the three-member Misdemeanor Appeal Court months ago, the competent Appellate Prosecutor’s Office had determined the trial of the case for the day after tomorrow, Friday, June 23.

However, after the announcement of the national elections of June 25, it was decided to suspend the operation of the courts throughout the country from the 21st to the 28th of the month. Finally, about two weeks ago, an emergency hearing was set for the case of little Melina on June 30.

As neakriti.gr wrote at the time, a ministerial decision provided for some exceptions regarding the suspension of the courts. However, the case in question did not, according to information, fall under them.

However, because there is a risk of statute of limitations for the act (negligent homicide), on December 28, 2023 (then the 8th anniversary), the Eastern Crete Appeals Prosecutor requested the President of the Eastern Crete Appeals to designate an extraordinary trial for the case. In fact, the president, by her act, set an extraordinary trial for Friday, June 30, i.e. one week after the originally scheduled trial.

It is recalled that the appeal against the decision of the Three-member Misdemeanor Appeal Court was made last January by the deputy prosecutor of the Supreme Court. The application was discussed by the Seventh Criminal Division of the Supreme Court last February and was finally accepted in early May.

It is recalled that the anesthesiologist was acquitted at first instance by the Three-member Court of Misdemeanors of Heraklion in 2021. However, the prosecutor of Edra had proposed to the court of first instance that the accused be declared guilty.
