Preliminary examination will be carried out by order of public prosecutor of Rhodes for the incident that was revealed in the previous days on the island and related to the working conditions employee in beach bar.

According to what has become known, this development took place after what has been made public about the incident and also the visit this morning, by the staff of the Labor Center of Rhodes, to the competent District Attorney of Rhodes, causing the immediate reaction of the prosecutor who ordered the further investigation of the case.

In this context, police officers of the Security Directorate of Rhodes are going to receive statements as well as evidence in order to ascertain what exactly is true in this case.

More specifically, this morning, an echelon of the Rhodes Labor Center consisting of the president Panagiotis Eglezos and the president of the hotel workers association Thanasis Stamoulis, members of the administration of the Rhodes Labor Center visited the competent District Attorney of Rhodes, to inform him of two incidents they received country on the island last Friday, June 30.

As Mr. Englesos stated, “one concerns the working waiter, whose image has gone around the world for the fact that he serves in the sea.” “For this reason, we asked the prosecutor to ensure that the competent department of the Labor Inspection, i.e. technical inspectors, come from Athens – because unfortunately there is no Technical Inspection in our area, a request that the Labor Center has been persistently asking for for ten years created in an area where there are thousands of businesses that are the flagship of tourism, we cannot expect the four inspectors from Piraeus to come to cover the entire South Aegean and deal with such situations” noted the president of the Labor Center of Rhodes and added:

“The prosecutor was also informed about the other incident of the beating of an employee in the Old Town, and an investigation will be launched there to see the real causes of what happened.

We as the management of the Labor Center as well as the hotel workers union, even though the workers issued a statement that everything is fine and they do not want any support in essence from the trade union, we are obliged to protect those who signed this text and all the other workers who in the future they will be called upon to deal with such orders or situations in their workplace.”

However, the president of the Labor Center of Rhodes clarified that these are “isolated incidents” and that “the general picture in our region as far as workers are concerned is better than in previous years”.

It is noted that regarding the matter of the waiter, there was an intervention by the Ministers of Labor, Adonis Georgiadis, and the Ministers of Shipping, Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, who gave orders for immediate checks to be carried out by the competent agencies.

However, the employees of the specific beach bar themselves, with a statement issued by them, point out that “we do not work under “medieval conditions”, as was said by the mass media, nor are we “blackmailed” or “forced” to do things we do not wish to do during the execution of our duties” and they add: “On the contrary, the beach bar where we work is staffed by young people and most of us have been working for many years, we have fun and a willingness to work, there is a friendly atmosphere and a spirit of cooperation for common benefit, we take initiatives and we share ideas that we all realize together.”
