Hundreds of Athenians and young children participated in the great celebration organized yesterday afternoon by the Municipality of Athens at the Municipal Market of Kypseli (DAK), on the occasion of its renovation and reopening.

The event marked the beginning of a new era for the symbol market of Fokionos Negri that first opened in 1937 and for many decades it was the point of reference for the wider area of Kypseli. After the completion of the renovation works by the municipality, the Market, which is now under the management of Technopoliswas formed into a modern center of commerce and culture.

The mayor of Athens, Kostas Bakoyannis, during the event, in his statement, emphasized: “The Municipal Market returns renewed to Kypseli. We welcome to its renovated space the new tenants, the professionals who breathe life back into the Athenian landmark, which was deeply loved by all. The Agora of Kypseli – this historic building that is a century old – is once again a point of reference for Athens, becoming an integral part of the neighborhood and connected to its people. We invite all Athenians and all Athenians to walk in its renewed and welcoming space and discover the new “hangout” of the city that promotes culture”.

The president of Technopolis of the Municipality of Athens – the management body of the DAK, Konstantinos Dedesspoke about a separate area of business activity and at the same time about a cultural area and wished, just as the Municipality of Athens and Technopolis “embraced” this effort, that “the world of the region and beyond” would “embrace” it as well.

The visitors toured the “heart” of the Agora, its nine shop-workshops (7 permanent and 2 pop-up) that were shaped according to its new identity.

They also spent time in the renewed “Atrium” and had fun with loud summer music from the city’s radio station “Athens 9.84”, which participated in the event with its producers.

Followed by the concert “By the Wave” with the artists Paulina Voulgarakis, Violeta Ikaris, Pantelis Kyramargios, Thanos Matzilis, Eleanna Varelas, who presented a special musical performance from the new wave of singers, collaborating with the “Rhythm” Orchestra.

The concert took place in the context of “All Athens is a stage 2023” of the Culture, Sports and Youth Organization of the Municipality of Athens (OPANDA).

In the area of the Agora there is a permanent historical exhibition “Municipal Market of Kypseli – Voices | Stories | People” that operates in the area and designed the Fotaeri Industrial Museum especially for the DAK. In it the visitor discovers – among other things – exhibits that are authentic objects of the old Agora, as well as the history of the building itself, its people, but also of the neighborhood of Kypseli, in which the Agora is hosted.

Through precious archival material, the historical route is presented, from its establishment in 1937 until 2003 when it stopped operating, highlighting its importance in the area but also the people who were part of its history: Its creators, the residents of the neighborhood , merchants, but also visitors-consumers.

The exhibition is interactive and the visitor uses, in addition to sight, touch and hearing to discover it. It is indicative that the exhibition shows excerpts from black-and-white films of the old Greek cinema that were filmed in the Agora building, such as the masterpiece “Kalpiki Lira” from 1955. Also, the content will be enriched by materials and objects of those who wish to contribute to the exhibition.

With the expiration of the concession contract, which was extended until December 2022, the Municipality of Athens entered into a programming contract (article 12 of Law 4412/2016) with the Ministry of Culture, the Region of Attica, and the Technopolis of the Municipality of Athens, in which was also entrusted with its management. The new operation plan of the Market was previously discussed in an open consultation in the 6th Municipal District.

The Municipality of Athens, through Technopolis, has now undertaken the maintenance and promotion of the historic site, organizing – among other things – cultural events, permanent exhibitions and educational programs, open to the public.
