In a letter to the General Directorate of the Economic Crime Prosecution Service (SEPO), the Deputy Minister of National Economy and Finance, Haris Theocharis, asks for intensification of controls in places of increased tourist traffic, with special emphasis on violations related to the distribution and consumption of alcoholic beverages.
The aim is to limit trade and consumption contraband alcohol, as well as adulterated, dangerous for the human organism, alcoholic products.
Specifically, Mr. Theoharis asks the SDOE to intensifies its actions, focusing in particular on the sale of alcohol to young people. The deputy minister draws the attention of the SDOE, as a competent agency above all, in order to avoid unfortunate events, such as the recent deaths of three young tourists in Ios and Zakynthos.
Mr. Theocharis highlights as a priority and points to SDOE the immediate taking of measures, such as:
Drawing up a program of actions, within 10 days, to combat the smuggling of alcoholic beverages. The SDOE is invited to submit its business plan to the office of the Deputy Minister.
Likewise, the SDOE should proceed with the creation of a strategic plan for the dismantling criminal networks, which illegally traffic in alcoholic beverages.
The SDOE should necessarily proceed with the increase of the mobile units for recording the findings, which are collected in the context of controls.
Also, Mr. Theocharis sets as a basic condition that he is constantly informed by the SDOE, about the planning and progress of the audits being carried out, as well as about the findings of these audits.
