See how the surrounding area of the Athens Conservatory will be
Height financing 3.2 million euros from European funds, the Municipality of Athens secured for the regeneration of the surrounding area of the Athens Conservatory, which will create a “lung” of green space 9 acres in the heart of the city
This is the area around the perimeter of Rizari Street, Vasilissis Sofia Avenue, Vasileos Konstantinou Avenue, Vasileos Georgiou II and Rigillis Streets. The implementation of the project, which has been pending for decades, is undertaken by the Athens Conservatory.
“Having once again succeeded in drawing European funds from the NSRF, we are enabling the Athens Conservatory to implement a valuable project with a multiple footprint in the center of the city. Upon its completion, an area that has remained neglected and cut off from the urban fabric will be transformed into an upgraded and beautiful green space for Athenians and visitors to the capital to enjoy. At the same time, the emblematic Conservatory will be functionally and aesthetically connected to the Lyceum of Aristotle, the Byzantine and Military Museums, as well as the National Garden, creating a visible pole of culture in Athens”, said the Mayor of Athens in his statement. Kostas Bakoyannis.
For his part, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Athens Conservatory, Nikos Tsouchlos, noted: “The park that surrounds the Athens Conservatory has always been, like this emblematic building itself, one of the great urban outstandings of the last decades. Despite all the individual beautification interventions of the Municipality of Athens from time to time, this area, with a total area of nine acres in the heart of the city, remained as a whole a “no man’s land”, functionally cut off from the urban fabric and the neighboring cultural organizations – High School of Aristotle, Byzantine Museum-, at the mercy of vandalism of all types. An ambitious project to restore and highlight this space, based on analytical studies by the office Thymios Papagiannis and Associates financed by Alpha Bank, is today undertaken by the Municipality of Athens. The Board of Directors of the Music and Drama Society Odeon of Athens – 1871 expresses its warm thanks to the Mayor of Athens and his entire team for the interest with which they surround this important urban intervention”.
What does redevelopment include?
With its completion, the project will provide the Athenians with a reformed green space, which will connect the neighborhood of Pagratio with Kolonaki. The redevelopment is expected to strengthen sustainable mobility in the city and contribute to the environmental upgrade, through the improvement of the microclimate of the area.
According to the plan, the renovation will include the creation of distinct entrance routes to the park, the marking of entrances and exits – to make the area more accessible and pleasant – the removal of cars and two-wheelers, the substantial reuse of the alsyllium in the southern part of the park space, the creation of a dynamic element of water and greenery, the regeneration of the northern side of the space.
Through the renovation projects of the surrounding space of the Athens Conservatory, a visual and functional connection will be achieved with the neighboring cultural spaces: The Byzantine Museum and the Lyceum of Aristotle, the War Museum and the National Garden.
The point will become an open space for everyone to access education and culture, with the implementation of educational programs and the possibility of cultural uses of the Conservatory itself.
