In state of heightened alertnessthe civil protection mechanism is located, in regional unit of Ilia after the prediction of the general secretariat of Civil Protection for a very high risk of fire, (category 4).

According to the counterregion of Ilia, the “Ikaros” team, a team from the Arson Crimes Directorate and a pedestrian section waiting at the Lechaina fire department, as well as the Maltese firemen’s team at the Ancient Olympia fire station, as part of the firefighter pre-installation program, will be located in the regional unit as a precaution.

In addition, from today, and for the next few days, there will be, according to the vice-region, increased patrols on a 24-hour basis – with a special emphasis on areas that present a high risk – by the fire brigade, the police, the army, the air force, the civil protection departments of the municipalities and the forest offices.

In the meantime, with nine meteorological cameras at key points throughout the regional unit of Ilia, the prevention sector of the Civil Protection department is strengthened, not only for fire cases, but overall for the monitoring of weather phenomena in real time.

The administration of the fire services of Ilia and the civil protection department of the regional unit of Ilia have been connected to this particular network of cameras.

In fact, according to the opposite region, “this possibility is provided not only in operational centers through fixed computers, but also remotely, from the field, using portable electronic devices.

In statements made by Deputy Governor Ilias, Vassilis Yiannopoulos, he said that “the preventive actions of the district do not stop at cleaning public spaces, road networks and infrastructure, but we take advantage of new technologies and the possibilities that they provide us”, adding: “The network of cameras that we have installed – and will be strengthened by adding new ones in other places – is a valuable tool for the civil protection mechanism, both in the field of prevention and suppression of a fire. It follows the installation of the innovative tracking system for private vehicles and construction machinery that support the work of the fire department in cases of emergency. Its value and usefulness is twofold, since in addition to the fire fighting season, it will provide valuable meteorological data during the winter as well, to monitor weather phenomena as well.”

According to the anti-region, the selection of the points for the installation of the cameras at high altitudes was done in collaboration with the administration of the fire services of Ilia, in order to “cover” large geographical areas, while their installation was done with the collaboration of public and municipal services, as well as organizations.

Also, according to the anti-region, the image provided by the cameras – without recording data and persons – with high resolution and great clarity, enables the competent authorities, on the one hand, to detect a possible fire and on the other hand to monitor its evolution or any other weather phenomenon in real time.
