The uncontrollable, destructive fire in Rhodes and the dramatic images of the evacuation of three large hotels by thousands of – mostly British – foreign tourists, have begun and are being shown extensively in the British media and on social media.

A British tourist from Kiotari in Rhodes told Skynews he was forced to leave his hotel and “drag his bags for two hours” in 40 degree Celsius heat.

British users on social media describe the dramatic situation on the island in unflattering terms.

“Currently stranded in #Rhodes escaping fires on foot – left everything at hotel & left with towels on our faces. My youngest son just told me he doesn’t want to die. There is no update from any authority. Scary situation here,” wrote user Paul Karlburgi on Twitter, according to Skynews.

“Jet2 (his travel agency) where are you? No help, communication or guidance. I had to walk 6km in the heat on dirt roads with smoke and ash with a 5 year old. No possessions,” wrote another.
