In Rhodes, where the fire has been raging for the sixth day, Efthymis Lekkas, a professor of Natural Disasters, is here, conveying the images of the destruction from the huge forest areas that have burned and the enormous damage to infrastructure, houses and tourist accommodation.

Speaking to ERT about the village of Laerma that was “besieged” by the fire on Saturday night, he stated that mainly the surrounding area and some houses have been completely destroyed.

As he said, the morphology in the area is such that it favors the development of the fire. “The environment has really been destroyed. The images I see are unprecedented for a forest fire.”

He emphasized that there are still open outbreaks which are working and which aerial means are trying to contain.

“A forest fire is not primarily judged by its extent. I have been to many forest and mega-fires both in Greece and abroad. It is a special fire here because the center of the environment of Rhodes is essentially affected,” he commented.

Referring to the tourist accommodation that has been damaged or burned to the ground as well as the tourist season in Rhodes that will be affected.
