In many cases, even the dominant ones were left to their own devices, as the Intermunicipal Center for the Care of Stray Animals finds
Ambulances and rescuers Intermunicipal Center for the Care of Stray Animals (DIKEPAZ) they moved daily to the fire-stricken areas of Attica, to provide all the necessary assistance to the animals that were in danger or were injured.
In particular, two of the DIKEPAZ ambulances were constantly moving on the old National Highway Athens – Thebes near the fire front of Derbenochoria, while two other vehicles did the same in the area of Kalyvion – Lagonissi.
According to a relevant announcement by the organization, the official reports made by the DIKEPAZ ambulance crews during this period allow some conclusions:
- Conclusion 1st: In addition to stray animals, which are always the most vulnerable in such cases, there were also domesticated animals that were left behind to burn, either because their guardians did not have time or were unable to free them, or because they did not care to provide them with a way out.
The unacceptable animal phenomenon bound and limited in shacks or houses that had been given over to the flames, it was, unfortunately, repeated in this natural disaster.
- Conclusion 2: As a matter of fact and tragically proved, in private “shelters”, farms, or buildings that functioned as asylums for sheltering stray animals, no effective fire protection work had been done and no safety or evacuation plan had ever been prepared for the “bad time”.
As it is underlined “these deficiencies and the disregard of safety measures, turned into a nightmare and unimaginable tragedies for the unfortunate animals trapped there”.
It is noted that DIKEPAZ has a complete plan to manage and deal with similar cases, with the safety of animals and staff in mind.
