The meeting, which took place via teleconference, was attended by the Deputy Minister of Interior, Stelios Petsas, the Deputy Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Evangelos Tournas, the Deputy Minister under the Prime Minister, Christos Triantopoulos, responsible for state General Secretary of Civil Protection, Vassilios Papageorgiou, the General Secretary of Primary Health Care, Marios Themistokleous, the Attica Regional Governor, George Patoulis, the Central Greece Regional Governor, Fanis Spanias, Peripherios A Lesvos PE, Panagos Koufelos, as well as the President of KEDE, Dimitris Papastergiou.

In addition, the Chief of General Staff, General Konstantinos Floros, the Chief of the Fire Brigade, Lieutenant General Stefanos Kolokouris, the Commander of the National Coordination Center for Operations and Crisis Management (ESKEDIK), Lieutenant General E Commander of the Attica Traffic Directorate, Spyridon Laskos and the General Coordination Director of the General Secretariat for Civil Protection, Foivos Theodorou.

During the meeting, the Director of the National Meteorological Service (EMY), Theodoros Kolydas, informed in detail the political leadership of the Ministry and all participants about the course that will follow the upcoming bad weather, while the “present” was given by the CEO , Anastasios Manos and representatives of the National Road Network management concessionaires (Aegean Motorway SA, Moreas SA, Nea Odos SA / Central Road SA). HEDNO stressed, among other things, that its crews are already moving to island and other areas with difficult access, where there may be problems with electricity, in order to be able to intervene immediately, if necessary. HEDNO has also made available to the public a free telephone line for damage announcements (800 400 4000).

The readiness of all competent bodies for their immediate intervention in case of emergency due to adverse weather conditions was confirmed, in accordance with the General Plan for Emergency Response and Immediate / Short-term Management of the Consequences of the Occurrence of Snowfall and Frost with ” North “, while the Fire Services of the areas where the phenomena are expected to occur are in a state of increased readiness, with the possibility of further escalation, if required, in order to deal with any problems. Similarly, as noted by A / GEETHA General Konstantinos Floros, the Armed Forces throughout the Territory are also on standby to assist where needed with personnel and means. It was also decided to activate 112 if deemed necessary to send warning messages to residents, depending on the course of events.

In addition, for the most effective coordination of the Civil Protection forces, it was decided to operate in the Regional Units that are expected to be affected by the bad weather, Unified Coordination Centers, with the participation of the Fire Brigade, the Hellenic Police, the Armed Forces, the Local Armed Forces. as in the cases of bad weather “Ballos” and “Diomidis”, with very positive results for the coordination of services and the immediate solution of problems.

Minister Stylianidis stressed that all agencies will be on full alert day and night throughout the manifestation of the phenomena and stressed that the whole mechanism, in full vigilance, will do everything to keep the country functional and any problems due to of bad weather to be resolved as quickly as possible.

Finally, it is worth noting that, as stated by the Deputy Minister of Interior, Stelios Petsas, instructions have been given to the Municipalities, in order to take all appropriate measures to facilitate the vaccination process and the smooth attendance of citizens at vaccination centers.

Finally, it was decided to hold a new coordination meeting on Sunday, January 23, to re-evaluate the situation.

Following the relevant forecasts, we call on the citizens to be especially careful, to avoid unnecessary movements during the peak of the phenomena (heavy snowfall, frost conditions) and to faithfully follow the following basic instructions:

If you are going to travel by car:

  • To be informed about the weather and the condition of the road network
  • Have anti-skid chains in their vehicle and the tank full of fuel
  • To travel, if necessary, preferably during the day, preferring the main roads
  • To inform their relatives about the route they are going to follow
  • Change their travel schedule to avoid the onslaught of the weather
  • To faithfully follow the instructions of the locally competent bodies, such as Traffic, etc.

If moving on foot:

  • Wear with multiple layers of light clothing instead of a heavy garment and wear appropriate shoes to avoid injuries due to slipperiness

It is reminded that according to the Extraordinary Bulletin of Dangerous Weather Phenomena issued yesterday, Thursday 20 January 2022, by the National Meteorological Service (EMY), the first weather system will affect us from Saturday (22/1/2022) and the second, which will be stronger, from Monday (24/1/2022). The main characteristics will be the very low temperatures, the heavy snowfall even in the plains of northern and eastern Greece as well as in the Aegean islands and the northerly winds of 8 to 9 Beaufort in the east.

More detail:

1) Low temperatures:

From Saturday, the temperature is expected to gradually drop throughout the country. It is pointed out that from Monday to Wednesday the temperatures will be very low and their maximum values ​​will not exceed 2 to 3 degrees Celsius. At the same time the frost will be strong and especially in the central and northern country locally total.

2) Snowfall:

A) on Saturday 22/1/2022 will be affected by snowfall even plain areas initially of Macedonia and Thrace and gradually of Thessaly, Eastern Sterea and Evia. Towards night, snowfall will start throughout the Aegean and in places in the central and northern part will be dense.

B) on Sunday 23/1/2022 a recession of the phenomena is expected on the mainland, while in Evia and throughout the Aegean the heavy snowfalls will continue from time to time.

C) on Monday 24/1/2022 the snowfall will intensify and will be locally dense initially in the Central and North Aegean, Evia, Eastern Thessaly and Eastern Sterea and gradually in the Eastern Peloponnese and throughout the southern Aegean to Crete and the Dodecanese. Occasional snowfalls will occur in Macedonia and Thrace.

D) on Tuesday 25/1/2022 the phenomena will show a recession in the northern country, but in the rest of the regions the heavy snowfalls will continue.

3) Stormy Winds:

On Monday and Tuesday, windy to very windy north northeast winds (8 to 9 Beaufort) will prevail in Eastern Greece and mainly in the Aegean region.
