“29-year-old Michalis Katsouris was the victim of an organized and premeditated attack by criminal elements, known for years to international and national sports, judicial and police authorities, who failed to protect human life, Michalis’ life, physical integrity and safety of ordinary citizens and children, on Greek soil, in New Philadelphia, in Attica” states Pleussi Eleftherias and Zoe Konstantopoulou in their intervention.

“A life was lost, many were endangered, a family mourns their child, a mother is hospitalized, and our fellow human beings were exposed to traumatic indelible experiences, on the occasion of a football match, which, after all this, was not canceled for good, but simply postponed for a few days… The data published reveal another case of “let’s go wherever it comes out”, with human life as a victim”, he notes and comments:

“As if nothing happened, another dreaded match is scheduled to take place in a few hours, with non-existent security guarantees. UEFA, the Greek Government and the Greek Police are showing an unrecognizable laxity in the face of the facts, the obvious risks and their responsibilities.”

“The matches should have been suspended altogether and not allowed to develop. No amount of money justifies the risk to human life. The Greek Government should have already made official representations to UEFA and to the Croatian Government, for taking initiatives and responsibilities, immediately investigating, suppressing and preventing criminal phenomena”, he continues, stressing that “transnational cooperation is imperative and due action”. “The same goes for UEFA’s assumption of responsibility for effective protection of citizens and fans from the murderous violence that is activated on the occasion of and on the sidelines of its international sporting events.”

“Freedom Sailing follows the developments with intense concern and underlines that human life is the supreme good, which no government, no sports organization, no financial interest has the right to sacrifice,” the party concludes in its statement.
