US President Joe Biden declared a state of natural disaster in Hawaii, where from devastating fires a town on Maui was almost completely destroyed and at least 36 people were killed.

Declaring the area a natural disaster frees up significant federal resources that “will be made available to those affected in Maui County,” the White House explained in a statement.

With these resources, among other things, the rescue and reconstruction efforts of the island will be financed, where the tourist town of Laheina, the old capital of the kingdom of Hawaii, was practically leveled.

Those affected will be able to apply to be granted temporary housing or to receive money to repair their homes. Businesses will also join recovery programs.

Biden also called Hawaii Governor Josh Green and expressed his condolences for the loss of life and the damage to homes.
