The island of Zakynthos comes alive every summer, not only because of the continuous increased tourist development, but also because it is the second most important breeding ground for the sea turtle Caretta caretta in the Mediterranean.

This year, according to the Natural Environment and Climate Change Organization (OFYPECA), more than 1,800 nests were created on the beaches of Laganas Bay, which makes this year one of the years with the greatest nesting of the last forty years in Zakynthos.

It is noteworthy that the number of nests has exceeded (before the verification of scientific data) the levels of 2020 which was a special year due to the Covid-19 pandemic that had just broken out, with a direct result in the drastic reduction in the number of visitors to Zakynthos.

From the nests created this year in Zakynthos, more than 200,000 turtles are expected to find their way to the sea, some of which will one day – in about 25 years – return to the same beaches to reproduce, contributing to the survival of the protected species his.
