High temperatures are expected to prevail in the country during the next 10 days, according to the latest forecast data of the National Observatory of Athens / meteo.gr.
The reason will be the persistence of hot gas masses above the Eastern Mediterranean in combination with the absence of significant phenomena. According to available data, these air masses will be 2 to 5 °C warmer than normal for the season.
The image below shows the range of temperature variation up to 08/25 at a height of approximately 1500 meters above Athens.
The red line shows the “warmest” scenario, while the blue line shows the “coldest” scenario. The green line shows the average temperature variation based on all available model scenarios.
Finally, the approximate average value of the period is marked with the black horizontal line according to data from the period 1991-2020. As it becomes apparent, almost all scenarios give temperatures higher than normal for the season. The height of 1500 meters is used to study temperature changes in the lower part of the atmosphere.
It is noted that the final configuration of the temperature near the ground depends on a number of factors such as e.g. the presence/absence of clouds and phenomena and the wind.
Overall, the temperature is expected to rise gradually over the next few days and remain at high levels until the end of next week, naturally showing small fluctuations from day to day and also between different regions of the country. With the forecast data available so far, the temperature from Monday 21/08 will reach or locally exceed 40 °C. During the night, however, the minimum will drop below 27-29 °C with the exception mainly of urban centers where the urban heat island effect will keep the minimum temperatures between 27 and 29 °C.
