Sleepless nights, tension and queues many citizens register at police stations to avoid new identities. It is indicative the situation in Patras.

Over 50 people were forming a queue in the morning at the AT of Patras, as they wanted to renew their police IDs with new, but old-type ones, to avoid the new so-called… “chipped” IDs that will be issued from mid-September.

Speaking to SKAI, the president of the police officers of Achaia Haris Tsitsikas he emphasized that “in the last few days we are experiencing a difficult situation regarding the issuance of the new identities. Several fellows are licensed, and quite a lot of people, either because of religious beliefs or other prejudices, come to get IDs to avoid issuing new ones, thinking there might be a tracking system or whatever.”

In recent weeks this has been happening, Mr. Tsitsikas explained, throughout the night in Patras there were 30 to 40 people at the police headquarters, from 12 to 1 in the evening, they took chairs and sit down to take a turn.

“At night we also had arguments, as to who is first, there is tension, soon there will be an increase in temperature.”

“Citizens will suffer over an issue that has taken on too much dimension, we are simply talking about the harmonization of Greek identities with the European ones. Some people really need to get an ID because they’ve lost it and it’s difficult,” explained the policeman.
