2021 was a difficult year for the automotive industry, which faced unprecedented challenges. There was a significant reduction in sales of new cars due to the lack of semiconductors. However, some specific color shades show consistent values, timeless choices and were not affected by the negative climate.
Achromatic colors, ie white, black, gray and silver, are still the most popular. They have a classic, timeless beauty and are connected with both the environment and high technology. But new colors appear that are beginning to win the impressions and tastes of drivers.
As the designers of BASF predicted years ago, blue is beginning to gain ground. The same is true of red, which is beginning to gain market share from colorless colors in many parts of the world. Although the numbers are smaller, green and beige still appear in the data and the colors are not in the usual, expected shades.
In Europe there is a great variety of colors and shades. Blue, except for colorless options, is the most popular color scheme. At the moment there are almost 180 shades of blue, from the blue of the sky to the dark blue of the night, which are attractive fresh and youthful, while appearing in all body types and in all categories of cars. Red is in second place, away from blue, followed by a small number of shades of green.
In terms of color choices, white continues to be the most popular, but gray is gaining ground. In gray there are several options, with different effects and recommendations that enhance its presence. The range of 160 shades of gray ranges from elegant, dark and bright colors to light and sporty colors.
Although white is still the favorite color in Asia and Oceania, its popularity has begun to decline. Black and gray continue to improve, maintaining the upward trend of the last four years, which changes the presence of white vehicles on the roads. 79% of new cars produced in Asia and Oceania were painted colorless in 2021. Blue as a color proposition is on the rise, reflecting global data from other regions. He got a share of red, which decreased. Brown and gold appear in satisfactory numbers, while beige, orange, yellow, green and violet are about 1% each.
Color preferences are changing rapidly across America. Blue seems to be outperforming, as its share fell by 4% compared to last year, reaching the levels of 2017. Colorless options, including white, rose sharply in North America, while declining globally, which did not happen with silver and gray, which are low on the options. Among the color choices, red had an increase of 1%. Red and blue are the most popular color choices today.
Finally, in South America, blue increased by 3% in 2021, gaining market share over red. While car buyers in this area tend to be conservative, some new nuances are starting to attract buyers.
