Incidents took place in Chloraka, Paphos, on Sunday evening, after a protest against immigration.
According to an announcement by the Cypriot Police, around 6 pm yesterday, approximately 300 people gathered on Eleftherias Avenue in Chloraka for an event on immigration. The entire event was policed by members of the Paphos Police Department and the MMAD.
Afterwards, the participants of the event held a protest march followed by the members of the Police. At some point the participants split into smaller groups and followed different paths in the area of Chloraka, committing acts of violence and causing malicious damage.
Specifically, the Police received complaints from two persons who were attacked resulting in their injuries, while in six other cases complaints were made for causing malicious damage to property. In order to deal with and suppress the incidents, personnel of the ADE Paphos were recalled, while further reinforcements were sent from the provinces of Limassol, Larnaca and TAE Headquarters. As part of the examinations, the Police proceeded to arrest two persons aged 34 and 21, residents of Pafos district, for spontaneous offences. The offenses of disorderly conduct and possession of an offensive instrument are being examined against them.
At around 1.30am today, another person aged 21 was arrested for the self-inflicted offense of unlawful possession of an offensive weapon. His arrest was preceded by a stop and search of the car he was driving, where a bat was found and tests are being carried out to determine if it is connected to the above offences. In addition, on the basis of a court warrant, the Police proceeded to arrest a 32-year-old person, in connection with the above offenses. The Paphos TAE in collaboration with the HQ TAE continues the investigations.
