401 BC: The Persian king Artaxerxes II defeats his brother and claimant to the throne Cyrus at the Battle of Kounaxa. A body of 10,000 Greek mercenaries, the famous “Myrioi”, who were praised by Xenophon in the play “Kyros Anavasis”, lined up on Cyrus’ side.

301: The Serene Republic of San Marino, one of the smallest states in the world, is founded by Marino of Rab.

1843: In Athens, the revolutionaries led by Colonel Kalergi force Otho to grant a Constitution.

1958: By decision of the government of Constantinos Karamanlis, the police are starting to cut hair with short hair as a means of repression for young tennis players.

1974: Andreas Papandreou founds the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK).

2004:Tragedy in Beslan, North Ossetia. Russian security forces storm a school seized by Chechen rebels. The dead reach 344, among them 172 children.
