At the same time, a second attempt to rescue hundreds of residents and foreign tourists from Platanias in South Pelion has been underway since 5:00 p.m.
A major rescue operation, by sea, of dozens of people was successfully completedshortly after 4 in the afternoon, from the settlement of Mikro tou Platanias, in South Pelion.
More than 150 people had been stranded in the settlement since Tuesday morning, after the road leading to the seaside resort was completely destroyed, and those stranded were all tourists who were vacationing in the area.
The release of all the people was impossible from land and because of this the mayor of South Pelion Michalis Mitzikos, in consultation with the Central Port Authority of Volos, they sent the tourist boat “Tarzan” which managed to approach the coast and finally pick up 105 people, Greeks and foreigners, who were in a desperate situation after 3 days without electricity, without water and without food, as the supplies of the hotels and boarding-houses were exhausted.
At the same time, a second attempt to free hundreds of residents and foreign tourists from Platanias of South Pelion has been underway since 5 pm, with the participation of the mayor of South Pelion, Michalis Mitzikos, and members of the Civil Protection. Serbian buses transporting tourists from the neighboring country have also been stranded in Platanias.
