The Climate Pact of Thessaloniki was signed in the afternoon at the town hall between the mayor of Thessaloniki, Konstantinos Zervas, local bodies and organizations, as part of the municipality’s participation in the European mission for the 100 climate-neutral and smart cities by 2030.

With the Climate Pact, the participating agencies are committed to supporting the municipality of Thessaloniki and to taking action to achieve the ambitious goal of transforming Thessaloniki into one of the first European zero-pollution cities.

At the beginning of his presentation, Mr. Zervas referred to the extreme weather phenomena that hit Thessaly, stating that he was shocked by the loss of human lives and the destruction of property. In fact, he added that the municipality of Thessaloniki is at the disposal of the affected places, by any possible means.

In particular, regarding today’s event and the signing of the Climate Pact, he said that this is a “big leap” and that “the objective of the municipality of Thessaloniki is to reach climate neutrality by 2030, at the same time following the legislative commitments of the National Climate Law”.

“We are placing high on the agenda the issues related to the climate crisis, mitigation and climate neutrality, but also adaptation from the ever-increasing effects of climate change”, added Mr. Zervas.

The presentation was undertaken by the deputy mayor of Electronic Government, Michalis Kupkas, while reference was made to the mission of the European Commission “Climate Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030” by Maria Vasilakou, former deputy mayor of Vienna and one of the editors of the program. Greetings were addressed, among others, by the deputy mayor of Tourism and president of the Metropolitan Development of Thessaloniki, Maria Karagianni and Georgia Ayfantopoulou, director of IMET EKETA.
