“Because we don’t have the tools, we don’t know how quickly the water level will drop in the Thessalian plain,” emphasized the professor of natural disasters and president of the National Climate Crisis Committee
“The question is how extreme is this phenomenon. When we have data for the 200, 300, 400 years of precipitation, we will be able to say that this is something that happens every 1000 years. It’s definitely something that happens every 100 years. What concerns me the most is whether we will have other such surprises in front of us,” said Kostas Synolakis, professor of natural disasters and president of the National Climate Crisis Committee, to SKAI and the show “Kalimera” with Giorgos Autias, estimating that “it is the heaviest rainfall we have seen in decades. Maybe in 5, 10 or 20 years we will have even more extremes due to climate change.”
Mr. Synolakis focused on what we must do to adapt to climate change and to manage the crisis. “We must see from the beginning the management of the Thessalian plain and the very large plains. The management studies must be done with the new data that is the rain, the amounts of water that exist and how they can be saved better. We are talking about Acheloos with rain data that existed three decades ago. Within four years the facts have changed dramatically. The projects that have been designed and still not implemented, were designed 30 years ago,” said the professor of natural disasters and president of the National Climate Crisis Committee.
“We have no experience in Greece. These are huge technical projects, they need people who have global experience. These days we cannot not know how long the Thessalian plain will be empty. Because we don’t have the tools, we don’t know how quickly the level will drop. Every village in Greece should have its own meteorological station, know its own meteorological conditions. The runoff should be measured in every Greek stream”, he added.
