1462: The Genoese Nicolaos Gatiluzzi conditionally surrenders the castle of Mytilene to Sultan Mehmet II. The Turks, disobeyed, break out in wild looting and massacres of the Greek inhabitants.

1835: The English naturalist Charles Darwin (known in Greece as Charles Darwin) arrives at the Galapagos Islands, a cluster of islands in the west of South America. In the five weeks of his stay, he will make observations on the rich animal kingdom of the islands, which will later give him the occasion to formulate his theory about the natural selection of living beings.

1934: Donald Duck, the famous Disney duck, also appears for the first time in a newspaper comic strip.

1967: Spyridon Marinatos discovers an important prehistoric settlement in Akrotiri, Santorini.

1970: In the first match of the first round in the Champions Cup, Panathinaikos defeated Zenes Es 2-1 in Luxembourg. It’s the start of the long march to Wembley.

1982: Massacres of Palestinians by Lebanese militia in Lebanon’s Sabra and Shatila refugee camps. The general and later prime minister of Israel, Ariel Sharon, is accused of being the moral perpetrator.

1736: Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit, German-Dutch physicist, who created the eponymous scale for measuring temperature. (Born 24/5/1686)

1932 :Ronald Ross, English doctor, who discovered that malaria comes from mosquitoes. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology in 1902. (Born 13/5/1857)

1977: Maria Kallas, Greek-American lyrical artist. (Born 2/12/1923)
