In the river Tsichliondas, in the river Tapsa of Faneromeni in Sigri and in the Psarapotamos in Skala Eresou, many migratory small birds find refuge
With the participation of many foreign birdwatchers who came to Lesvos to watch the autumn migration of birds, the bird observation and ringing actions continue in the wetlands of Western Lesvos, by the staff of the Natural History Museum of Lesbos Petrified Forest and the Center for Environmental Information of Kalloni.
The wetlands of western Lesvos, as is known, are a pole of attraction for Greeks, but especially for many foreign birdwatchers from all over the world, who flood the wetlands thanks to the remarkable birdlife and the special species of birds that are hosted during this period, during the autumn migration.
So far there have been four trips to the river Chewing gumon the river I baked of Faneromeni at Sigri and to Fishing river at Skala Eresou. The participants got to know the wetlands and the bird species that live in them, with the help of the ringing method.
Many migratory birds were observed, such as Yellow-throated Wagtails, Shrubs, Black-throated Wagtails, Psathopotamids, Brown-throated Wagtails and others that resort to the dense vegetation of the river estuaries to rest and search for food..
It should be noted that in the autumn there will be even more bird watching events during the fall migration.
This year’s autumn excursions to ecologically important areas of Western Lesvos with the theme “Wetlands of Western Lesvos – nature excursions” with the aim of informing and raising awareness among residents about the ecological and environmental value of wetlands, are co-organized by the Museum of Natural History of the Lesvos Petrified Forest, and the North Aegean Region. And they are carried out in the framework of the action “Actions to highlight protected areas of Lesvos”, which has been included in the Operational Program “North Aegean 2014-2020” and includes actions to raise awareness among the residents, visitors and students of Lesvos about the wetlands of Western Lesvos, through a series of information events, seminars and field trips. Bird ringing is carried out in collaboration with the Hellenic Bird Ringing Center.
