On November 17, the trial in the second degree of the former head of the National Theater was determined Dimitris Lignadis, who was sentenced in the first degree to 12 years in prison for raping two boys while he was acquitted of the accusation of two other rapes.

The trial before the Joint Court of Appeal will be conducted almost from scratch and with all possibilities open as to his criminal treatment as the court will consider the appeal brought by the Prosecutor against the judgment of the first court regarding one of the acquittals but also for the amount of the penalty imposed on the artist.

Dimitris Lignadiswho is free on probation granted by the trial court, was sentenced, in July 2022, as he was found guilty by a majority (4 to 3) of the rapes of two 17-year-olds, in Athens and Epidaurus, in 2015.

The court unanimously acquitted the artist of the rape of an adult in 2018 and by a majority (5 to 2) of the rape of a 16-year-old minor in 2011. It should be noted that the alleged victim of the 2018 case had not appeared in court to testify.

The court had decided to grant a suspensory effect to the defendant’s appeal and thus Dimitris Lignadis was released from prison with the imposition of conditionsthe day after the conclusion of the trial, after 17 months of temporary detention.

After the court decision the Prosecutor’s Office of Appeals ruled that the 16-year-old’s case should be re-examined and that the MoE should also judge whether the sentence imposed on him for the two 2015 cases is lowas considered by the Appellate Prosecutor who filed the appeal.

In the trial before the Court of Appeal the actor faces the possibility of a harsher sentence as he will be held accountable again for both the cases of the two 17-year-olds as well as for that of the 16-year-old who will be included in the indictment. If found guilty he will be faced with the possibility of imposing a greater penalty than the one at first instance, if the Appellants consider the judgment of the Appellate Prosecutor who appealed to be valid.
