The arrest of the captain, the governor and the pirate of the speed runner jet catamaran after two sailors fell into the sea in the port of Piraeus while performing cleaning work, the Piraeus Prosecutor’s Office ordered.

According to the Coast Guard, the two sailors, aged 55 and 34, are undergoing general examinations at the General Hospital of Nice.

The shipping unions of the Panhellenic Union of Merchant Marine Engineers (PEMEN), the Panhellenic Union of Lower Crews are calling for a full investigation of the incident with the two sailors who fell into the sea and the taking of immediate safety measures on all coastal shipping vessels. The unions report that the two sailors carried out cleaning work with a water hose on the left side of the ship, in the area where the lifeboats (barrels) are located, without any protective measures (safety belts, scaffolding, helmets, etc.).

The investigation of the incident is also requested by the Panhellenic Union of Merchant Navy Sailors PENEN, stressing that according to the first estimates, “the work was carried out in the external area of ​​the ship which is prohibited without having been provided with the means of safety and protection”. “Any performance of work that is prohibited by the legislation and the non-application of safety rules are a mortal danger for the Seafarers and the responsibilities of companies – YEN – Port Authorities are enormous”, notes, in its announcement, PENEN.
