THE bad weather Elias is already showing its teeth in areas of Greece with heavy rains and hail. Barrages of warning messages were sent from 112 to Achaia, Ilia, Corinthia, Zakynthos, Kefalonia, Fthiotida, Ithaca and Karditsa.

Progressive movements started from Region of Central Greece and the municipality of Lamieon, so as to proactively remove some residents from the Komma village and especially from the houses located very close to Sperchio. At the same time, there is a readiness for the total evacuation of the village if the need arises during the night.

And today the warning messages from 112 in the area of Fthiotida are continuous and inform the inhabitants about the severe weather phenomena and invite them to avoid unnecessary movements.

At the same time, all equipment together with leased earthmoving machines of both the Region and the Municipalities have been found in relevant places and are waiting.

Since midday, especially in the city of Lamia and the surrounding area, it has not rained, but according to the information provided by the competent services, torrential rains are expected after 9:00 in the evening.

See the weather forecast from SKAI meteorologist Christina Souzi:

A little while ago, the meeting which was organized with the Mayors in the Region of Central Greece was completed, with the presence of Minister of Civil Protection Mr. Vassilis Kikilia.

During the meeting it was noted that Fthiotida is expected to be in the center of the bad weather Elias and a very difficult night is expected for the city of Lamia as well as the wider region. It is predicted that there will be intense storms as well as flooding.

The extreme weather phenomena, early in the morning, showed their teeth as there was heavy rain in the area of Makrakomi, while yesterday in the area of Molos and Agia Triada the torrential rain was continuous.

It is worth noting that throughout the day we had no serious problems in the area of Domokos, which is injured by the previous bad weather, however, the concern of the residents of the wider area is great.

Problems were caused, early in the morning, on Lamia Karpenisiou road as transported materials fell on the road and covered the road surface. They were removed a few hours later with the intervention of machinery from the Region and the Municipalities. The Police Department of Fthiotida stopped traffic from the 30th to the 35th mile of the Lamia-Karpenisi road as well as for the same reason closed the traffic on the old Lamia-Stylida National Road at the height of the Lamia industrial area after transported materials covered the road surface.

Before noon they were removed and the road was reopened to traffic.

It should be noted that today the schools in the municipalities of Lamia, Makrakomi, Domokos and Stylida were closed and will also remain closed tomorrow for precautionary reasons.

According to relevant announcements from the education directorates, the courses will be held via distance learning.

Recommendations of Civil Protection

The General Secretariat of Civil Protection (civilprotection.gov.gr) of the Ministry of Climate Crisis & Civil Protection, has informed the competent government agencies involved, as well as the regions and municipalities of the country, so that they are on increased civil protection readiness, in order to face directly the effects of the occurrence of intense weather phenomena.

At the same time, the General Secretariat of Civil Protection recommends that citizens be particularly careful, taking measures to protect themselves from risks arising from the occurrence of severe weather phenomena.

In particular, in areas where heavy rainfall, storms or gale-force winds are expected to occur:

  • To secure objects which, if carried away by severe weather conditions, may cause damage or injury.
  • Make sure that the gutters and downspouts of the houses are not blocked and are working properly.
  • Avoid crossing torrents and streams, on foot or by vehicle, during storms and rainfall, but also for several hours after the end of their event
  • Avoid outdoor work and activities in marine and coastal areas during severe weather events (risk of lightning strikes).
  • Take shelter immediately during a hailstorm. Take shelter in a building or car and do not leave the safe area until they are sure the storm has passed. Hail can be very dangerous for animals too.
  • Avoid passing under large trees, under posted signs and in general areas where light objects (e.g. pots, broken glass, etc.) can become detached and fall to the ground (e.g. under balconies) .
  • To faithfully follow the instructions of the local authorities, such as Traffic, etc.

In areas with intense lightning activity:

If you are at home

  • Avoid touching plumbing pipes (kitchen, bathroom) as they are good conductors of electricity.

If you are in the car

  • Park it on the side of the road and away from trees that might fall on it.
  • Stay inside and turn on your stop warning lights (emergency lights) until the storm clears.
  • Close windows and do not touch metal objects.
  • Avoid flooded roads.

If you are outdoors

  • Take refuge in a building or car or sit on the ground immediately without lying down.
  • Take cover under solid branches of low trees if you are in the woods.
  • Never take shelter under a tall tree in an open area.
  • Avoid low-lying land for the risk of flooding.
  • Do not stand next to utility poles, power lines, telephone lines and fences.
  • Do not approach metal objects (eg cars, bicycles, camping equipment, etc.).
  • Stay away from rivers, lakes or other bodies of water.

If you are in the sea, get out immediately.

If you’re isolated on a flat surface and feel your hair stand on end (signaling that lightning is about to strike), sit deep with your head between your legs (to minimize your body surface area and contact with the ground ) by throwing the metal objects you have on you.

For information and announcements regarding the prevailing situation and the passability of the road network due to the influx of flood waters into it, citizens can visit the EL.AS website. www.astynomia.gr.
