High risk to wild salmon species, likely to mate with farmed fish
The authorities in Iceland have raised the alarm after thousands of salmon “escaped” from a fish farm.
Farmed ‘Norwegian’ salmon escaped from Arctic Fish farms and are believed to have since spread to many other rivers.
According to the Guardian there is a great environmental risk to the wild salmon species, which will likely mate with the farmed fish.
If this happens, the “offspring” of the cross may have characteristics that are unsuitable for survival in the wild, thus threatening the future of the wild salmon population.
Icelandic police are investigating whether #Mowi‘s #ArcticFish breached Iceland’s #fishfarming laws, after thousands of farmed salmon escaped ocean-based net pens. The firm’s CEO and board members face up to two years in jail if found guilty of #negligence. https://t.co/bykX8U6zFq
