Until the end of the year, the surface cleaning of the Thermaikos gulf continues uninterrupted, on a permanent and regular basis, as the new contract was signed between the Natural Environment and Climate Change Organization (O.FY.PE.K.A.) and the private company “North Aegean Slops”, which has the special anti-pollution vessel “Alkippi”.

The contract provides for the collection of floating objects and stains, as well as the treatment of incidents of pollution from oil, other substances and various physico-chemical phenomena that occur in Thermaikos Gulf.

The cleaning will be carried out twice a week, six hours a day, until December 31, 2023. The routes will start from the port of Thessaloniki and will be carried out to Cape Megalo Embolos in the east and the Deltas of Axios and Aliakmons in the west .

For the years 2024 and 2025, it is planned to sign a program contract between OFYPEKA, the Ministry of the Interior (Macedonia and Thrace Sector) and the Municipality of Thessaloniki, for the permanent process of cleaning the surface pollution of Thermaikos.

As the Deputy Minister of Macedonia and Thrace, Stathis Konstantinidis, explains: “The signing of the new contract ensures the continuation of the surface cleaning of the Thermaikos Gulf until the end of the current year and allows us to launch the appropriate actions so that the project continues without interruptions and the following years with regular and permanent funding. Thermaikos gulf is the “showcase” of Thessaloniki and with the valuable support of OFYPEKA we ensure that it is always clean and that the images of summer are not repeated”.
