The first flight organized by the State Department for the removal of American citizens from Israel landed in Athens tonight.

White House spokesman John Kirby earlier told reporters that this first specially chartered flight was “en route” to Europe. The US government is also considering the possibility of removing US citizens by sea.

We’re just trying to have more optionss”, he noted.

A source, cited by Reuters, said they are being planned and other such flights from Tel Aviv to Athens, at least until October 19.

United Airlines announced on Wednesday that it will add two more flights to its Newark-Athens route to help Americans trying to return to the US from Israel.

Today, the company also spoke about a third, additional flight, while Delta Air Lines also intends to increase its routes from Athens in the coming days. United, American and Delta have temporarily suspended nonstop flights to and from Israel.

Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs Richard Verma had contacts earlier this week with the airlines on the matter of the repatriation of the Americans. He reportedly told the companies that the US government has received nearly 17,000 requests for help from Americans who want to leave Israel.
