In the presence of a large number of people, the litany of the miraculous icon of Panagia Koroniotissa, the relics and the icon of Saint Demetrius took place today, in the context of the celebrations for the feast of Saint Demetrius and the arrival of the icon of the Virgin Mary from the Holy Monastery of Panagia Koronis Agrafon.

In a suffocating atmosphere, the procession started shortly after 11 am from the Holy Church of Agios Dimitrios, with the participation of a large number of believers.

The litany was followed by the civil and military authorities, the bands of the 3rd Army Corps, the Police and the Municipality of Thessaloniki, while members of the Army and the Navy paid their respects.

Agams of the armed forces, students of all school levels as well as members of dance clubs in traditional costumes, accompanied the procession through the streets of the city.

The government was represented by the Deputy Minister of Interior (Macedonia – Thrace) Stathis Konstantinidis.

Earlier in the morning, in the holy pilgrimage church of Agios Dimitrios, a Divine Liturgy was celebrated by Metropolitan Timotheus of Thessaliotides and Phanariophersalon.

The events continue as on At 6:30 p.m., a solemn multi-priestly vespers will be sung and at 9:30 p.m., a solemn holy vigil will be held.

Tomorrow, the feast day of the Patron Saint Demetrius, there will be a solemn high-priestly liturgy and an official eulogy for the liberation of the city.

It is noted that the litany of the relics and the holy icon of the Patron Saint Demetrius has been held since 1982, as from 1979 to 1980, the relics of the Saint were brought to Thessaloniki from Italy, specifically from San Lorenzo in Campo.

In recent years, it has been established, as part of the city’s celebration, that an icon of the Virgin Mary is always hosted.

From time to time, the icon of Panagia Axion Esti from Mount Athos and the icon of Panagia tis Ierosolymitisa from Jerusalem have been hosted.
