With the temperature well above 20 degrees Celsius and the residents still not parting with their summer clothes, the planning of the municipality of Thessaloniki for this year’s Christmas decoration of the city begins.
In this context, a Christmas market is expected to “sprout” again this year, a few meters above the statue of Eleftherios Venizelos, which will “serve” – ​​among other things – traditional sweets and hot drinks, Christmas gifts and toys, handmade jewelry and many other items, with the aim of stimulating shopping traffic in the center of Thessaloniki and at the same time conveying the festive mood to residents and visitors.
In collaboration with the Thessaloniki Chamber of Commerce, 39 wooden huts are to be erected in the section of Aristotelous Street enclosed by Mitropolitou Gennadiou, Philippou, Chalkeon and Egnatia Streets. The Christmas Market will have a lifespan of approximately one month, from December 7th until January 5th, 2024.
In the space there is the possibility to place four more wooden houses for clubs, NGOs, etc. with charitable and social action, while all the stands will be built uniformly, with a maximum permitted frontage length of three meters and decorated with thousands of colorful lights.
Among the products that will be sold in the area are snacks and sandwiches, syrups, honey macarons, curambies, diples and macaroons, traditional pies, donuts and piroski, caramelized nuts and hot drinks, spoon sweets and jams, Christmas gifts, toys and books.
The issue of the operation of the Christmas market will be discussed next Tuesday (October 31), at the meeting of the city council of Thessaloniki, requesting the House’s approval. According to the relevant recommendation of the Entrepreneur Service Directorate of the Vice Mayor of Finance, the work on the preparation of the market, the decoration, the installation and the electric lighting of the houses, will start on November 27 and the work of excavating and restoring the site should be completed until January 15 of the new year.
“We are proceeding normally with the planning of Christmas because the city must look ahead, spreading a festive mood both to the permanent residents and to the thousands of visitors who will choose to spend the holidays, for one more year, in our city”, said to APE-MPE the Deputy Mayor of Finance of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, Sokratis Dimitriadis.
