An upward trend in the concentration of viral tuberculosis of SARS-CoV-2 is reflected in the latest measurements for the research conducted by the Sewage Epidemiology Team of AUTh with EYATH, in collaboration with the Region of Central Macedonia and within the National Network of EODY.
According to data presented by , after a period of two weeks with small fluctuations between measurements, where there was a stabilization of the viral load at a high level, in recent days there seems to be a gradual further increase.
Specifically, in the samples taken daily at the entrance of the Thessaloniki Wastewater Treatment Plant, regarding the rationalized values of relative viral load secretion, the average value of the two most recent measurements, ie Monday 31/01/2022 and Tuesday 01/02/2022 is:
-Increased (+ 29%) in relation to the average value of the two immediately preceding measurements of Saturday 29/01/2022 and Sunday 30/01/2022.
-Fixed (+ 4%) in relation to the average price of the previous Monday 24/01/2022 and Tuesday 25/01/202.
“The high prevalence of the virus in the community is something we do not only see in the sewage or in the extremely high number of daily confirmed cases, it is something that everyone living in the city perceives and finds the frequency that someone is positive in family, friends or work. environment. We learn to live with the virus between us and we shield ourselves against it, observing the measures of self-protection from our exposure to it and mainly we are vaccinated. The Omicron strain may not be highly pathogenic, but those who are fully vaccinated are fully protected against the serious disease. “Let us not forget that the Delta strain has not been eliminated, in infections which are attributed to the serious diseases and the deaths of our fellow citizens”, said to APE-MPE the rector of AUTh and scientifically responsible for the research project, Professor Nikos Papaioannou.
Regarding the estimation of the total number of infected people (symptomatic and asymptomatic carriers) based on the methodology published by the AUTh Team (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.scitotenv.2020.150838), the professor Chemistry of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Thodoris Karapantsios stated: “In the last few days, the actively recorded cases, which secrete a viral load in the sewage, are estimated at approximately 31,000. The total number of infected people – registered and unregistered, symptomatic and not – is about 53,000. Of these, about 5,000 people get sick with the Delta strain, while about 48,000 people get sick with the Omicron strain “.
The coronavirus assessment methodology in municipal waste, developed by the AUTh team, streamlines the virus genome concentration measurements based on 24 environmental factors, which may alter the results of the measurements. The molecular method of real-time PCR, developed by the AUTh Team, has the ability to selectively amplify the part of the genome that encodes the spike protein of the Omicron strain.
