Greek confectionery is highly honored by the internationally renowned list of “Taste Atlas”. Recently, it released the list of best sweets around the world with France and Turkey occupying several places. On the other hand, the two Greek sweets that appear on the list are probably a bit unfair…

More specifically, position 37 is occupied by galaktobourek with the international media commenting: “This traditional Greek dessert consists of numerous leaves, sprinkled with melted butter, and combined with a light semolina cream. After it is thoroughly baked and frozen, the dessert is traditionally covered in an orange, sugary syrup, allowing the layers to absorb the flavors and turn the galaktoburek into a soft, velvety treat. This classic Greek sweet is commonly found in patisseries and traditional taverns across the country».

In position 34 are the “all time classic” melomakaroni. “Although believed to originate from ancient Phoenicia, honey macaroons are today a typical Greek Christmas treat. These delicious semolina cookies are traditionally flavored with honey, orange zest, cinnamon, olive oil and sometimes brandy. Immediately after baking, the honey macaroon cookies are drizzled with syrup and then sprinkled with ground walnuts. Although some argue that another Greek treat called finikia refers to a slightly different dessert, occasionally fried and served without nuts, today both names are used interchangeably“, writes the “Taste Atlas”.

At the top of the list are located french crepeswhile behind them, at 2nd placeit’s the Brazilian bombocadoat 3rd place it’s the Peruvian queso heladoat 4th place the tiramisu and 5th place the creme brulee.
