Facts:
1828: England, France and Russia sign the Protocol of London, by which they place the Peloponnese and the Cyclades under their protection, until the borders of Greece are definitively decided, following negotiations with the Porte.
1918: The founding conference of SEKE (now KKE) convenes at the offices of the Association of Steamship Engineers in Piraeus.
1922:English archaeologist Howard Carter discovers the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun in Egypt.
1944: The evacuation of Greece by the Germans is completed. German garrisons remain only on the islands of Rhodes, Kalymnos, Kos, Leros, Tinos, Milos, and in the NW part of Crete until May 1945.
1979: Iranian Islamists seize the US embassy in Tehran and hold 63 Americans hostage for 444 days. The attackers, mostly students, are calling on the US to send the former shah back to Iran to stand trial. The crisis that breaks out definitively seals the future of US President Jimmy Carter.
1996: Tragic accident outside Vathi, Samos. The passenger ship “Samaina” intercepts the missile boat “Kostakos”, which sinks. Four crew members are missing.

1901: Spyridon Marinatos, Greek archaeologist, with a very important excavation project in Thira, Santorini. In 1929, he theorized that the end of the Minoan civilization in the Aegean came from the eruption of the Thera volcano (1600 BC). (D. 1/10/1974)
