The architectural competition for the final configuration of Kolonaki Square after the completion of the metro works has been completed, as announced by “ANAPLASI ATHINAS SA”.
The proposal that prevailed was that of the xza-architects office, which released models of what Kolonaki Square will look like when the metro works for the line 4 station are completed.
According to the decision of the committee that gave the first prize to xza-architects, “the main objectives are the transfer of life to the center of the square, urban mobility and walking, as well as the recovery of the natural environment.”
The proposal has two collaborating levels: the square, relatively horizontal, at the low level of Koumpari Street, which allows the development of most of the activities of an urban square for all ages, and the diazoma, as a circular belvedere, which has its starting point from Patriarch Ioakeim and rises above on a free walk towards Koumpari.
The large height difference from north to south is solved by keeping the accesses unobstructed, forming two plateaus-levels. In this way, a single flat area of the square on the lower level is created which gives possibilities for multiple uses, with a kiosk, areas for coffee and an outdoor flower shop, areas for standing and waiting, events, traffic, etc.
The ring of the belvedere above is the most powerful element of the design, combining the promenade at an unprecedented urban level, but also an entrance canopy to the metro station.
