Mobilizations are being prepared by the inhabitants of the villages in the Aggitis region after the cutting of hundreds of century-old plane trees, along the Aggitis river, from Krinida to Agista, as part of anti-flood projects.

Botanist Yiannis Zalidas raised the issue with his complaint on social media, speaking of “a crime in Aggitis in a heavenly ecosystem a few kilometers from the Aggitis gorge to the old bridge. Until a few days ago, there was a small paradise that housed roe deer, wolves, foxes, hares, squirrels and other small mammals, many species of birds and reptiles and hundreds of plant species from century-old plane trees and walnut trees to rare wildflowers.”

Giannis Zalidas found support from foresters, environmentalists and associations of the region such as the Agistas Station Cultural Association which organized a meeting with the participation of representatives of organizations and active citizens who react to the cutting of trees which they characterize as “looting”, while it was decided to escalate the reactions in all directions and in a legal way in order to stop the cutting of the trees, to inform about the necessity of this extreme destructive action and to immediately clean the river of the transported materials.

“In addition to the looting of the trees, the trunks and branches that have fallen into the river and the riverbeds with the certain risk of being swept away in the event of a flood and blocking the arches of the ancient bridge at the Agistas Station, resulting in straining for another time and with the risk of collapse”, says a statement of the Cultural Association of Agistas Station, with which it requests the intervention of the competent authorities in order to stop the destruction.
