Roads move faster Public transport on the central roads of the capital, after the recent implementation of the Ring measure.

Specifically, according to the data available from the OASA telematics system database, comparing the period before and after the implementation of the Ring, in recent weeks an increase in the average speed of buses and trolleybuses has been recorded, reaching over 10% on several main roads, such as Kifisias St., Vasileos Konstantinou St., Mesogeion St., Iera Odos and Vouliagmenis St., during the morning and midday peak hours. This increase implies a reduction in journey times.

In particular, in the morning peak hours (07.00 – 10.00) 5 central road axes show an increase in speed after the implementation of the measure:

  • Kifisias St., from Psychiko Lighthouse to Ampelokipi (12.2%),
  • Vasileos Konstantinou Street, from National Gallery to Panathenaic Stadium (10.8%)
  • Sacred Way, from Eleonas to the Old Market in Piraeus (10.4%)
  • Vouliagmeni, from Ymitto to Kalirrois (6.7%)
  • L. Syngrou, from Agios Sosti to the Pillars of Olympian Zeus (6.5%)
  • St. Vasilissis Sofias, from St. Alexandras to Syntagma (3.3%)

In the midday peak hours (14.00 – 17.00) 11 central road axes show an increase in speed after the implementation of the Ring:

  • L. Alexandras, from Ampelokipis to Pedion tou ‘Areos (4.3%)
  • Akadimias Street, from Kaningos Square to Akadimias Street (8.3%)
  • Stadiou Street, from Omonia to Klathmonos Square (9.2%)
  • Patision Street, from Alexandra Street to Amerikis Square (7.3%)
  • Kifisias St., from Alexandras St. to Faro Psychikos (8.8%)
  • Mesogeion Street, from Michalakopoulou to St. of National Defense (11.9%)
  • St. Vasilissis Sofias, from St. Alexandras to Syntagma (8.1%)
  • Vasileos Konstantinou Street, from Hilton to Panathenaic Stadium (34.3%)
  • Vouliagmeni Street, from Ymitto to Kallirrois (10.4%)
  • Sacred Way, from Eleonas to the Old Market in Piraeus (2.5%)
  • Piraeus Street, from Omonia to Hamosternas Street (5%)

According to the data of the Agency’s telematics, in the same period, certain points on road arteries are also identified, where a decrease in the average speed of public transport vehicles is observed, during the morning peak hours, such as in Alexandras Street, from Parko to St. Ampelokipo (-3.1%) and on Patision Street, from Pl. America up to Areos Field (-1.9%).

On the midday peak hours, average speed reduction was recorded in St. Vas. Sofia, from Akadimias Street to Hippocrates (-1.5%), in Panepistimi Street, from Syntagma to Rex (-5.2%), in Patision Street, from Amerikis Square to Areos Square ( -1.3%).

However, despite the decrease in the average speed of MMM in some sections, the sign – in the overall road network of Athens – is positive.

In fact, the further increase in the average speed of road mass transport is expected to contribute to new digital cameras, who settled on Exclusive Bus Lanesto facilitate their surveillance by the Athens Traffic Police.

The control system (radar – camera) operates 24 hours a day base mounted in a pole-cabin (chamber) and controls the traffic of vehicles.

The vehicle that violates the A.L.L. will be recorded with encryption in a photo, which will be used by the Traffic Police to determine the violation. With the new digital cameras, an improvement in the traffic conditions of MMM movement in the bus lanes is expected, with obvious benefits in increasing the average speed of the vehicles and enhancing the frequency and reliability of scheduled routes.
