A small animal incinerator will be installed in the near future in eastern Thessaloniki, in the area where the only animal cemetery in the area has been operating since 2009. This development is expected to further meet the need of people who “lose” their pets, essentially beloved members of their family, and in many cases do not know what steps to follow, as they will soon be able to choose between burial and cremation.
“It will be a low-capacity incinerator, which means that small animals will be burned. He is coming from England in about two weeks from now, while at the same time I expect to receive in my hands the final licensing “, says the veterinarian Vassilis Psychogios to the Athenian / Macedonian News Agency.
He himself, wanting to serve the clients of his clinic almost twenty years ago, began to look for solutions to the problem of burying animals that had died. “The law allows the burial of an animal only in a private place. It is logical that in our area, where most of them live in apartments, they do not have a field and someone should resort – for example – to Sheikh Su to bury his dog. “It is both illegal and possible to be dug up by a wild animal, such as a fox”, explains Mr. Psychogios.
So he started the research and in 2005 he found an area in Kato Peristera, just outside the Basilicas of the municipality of Thermi, where after four years of legal action and relevant licensing, he managed to put into operation the first animal cemetery in Thessaloniki. “As it was something very new to me and I did not know how to organize it, I visited a similar one in Hamburg, Germany as part of a conference I attended and got ideas to implement here,” he says.
Already, in its 15 years of operation, about 400 animals have been buried, which are usually dogs and cats, but also rabbits or even parrots. “During the burial, if they wish, the owners of the animal are present, who then take care of the area. Excavation takes place in two years at the earliest, while the maximum period of stay is five years. The cost for the shortest stay is 150 euros “, points out Mr. Psychogios.
After the exhumation, those who want to keep the bones, while most ask for their cremation, where until now it took place in another licensed incinerator, with which Mr. Psychogios collaborates. In the next period, all the procedures can be done in the same place.
